We’re a generation of men raised by women. I’m wondering if another woman is really the answer we need.

I was a little stumped as to what I was going to focus on with my remix project, but scrolling through the Moving Image gallery, an idea hit me all of a sudden.

It came when I saw a series titled “How To Be a Teen in 1950″. I watched a few of the videos including “Going Steady?” “How to be Well Groomed”, and my personal favorite “I Want to be a Secretary”. I was in hysterics watching these videos, and thought to myself, “Jesus, this is nothing like our lives as teens and young adults today. Not even close.” And so I decided to illustrate the difference between teen life in the 50′s, and teen life today. Obviously, demonstrating the different mentalities is going to be the challenge, but I can do this through images.

I want to use clips from these instructional videos juxtaposed with photos of current teens/couples from today. For example, little Timmy from 1950 talking about taking Sally to the carnival would be followed by a quick cut to a photo such as this:

And when we see the videos about “Being Thoughtful” or treating a woman a certain way, we quick cut to something like this:

And along with these images, a really important aspect is going to be the music going along with the video/photo montage. I had a great idea to use a song called Bad Girlfriend by a band called Theory of a Deadman. I don’t know what the situation is with music and what we are/aren’t allowed to use, but there’s a reason I went for this song. Take a quick listen and you’ll see what I mean:

The lyrics are obviously shit (at least to a musician like myself, this is the epitome of lame “Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll”-cliche lyricism at its worst), but it makes a great point about a “girlfriend” in the 21st century.

I still need to skim through all the videos and really plan out step-by-step what I’m going to do, but I feel as though the framework for something interesting is definitely there.
